Marcia Freeman

Marcia Freeman, Resident artist and bodyworker, has made seven journeys to Zurich, Switzerland, since 1998, where she continues to train with Dr. Hans Flury, one of Europe’s foremost Structural Integration (Rolfing) practitioners. Dr. Flury’s pioneering contribution to the field of bodywork is a new movement technique based on Ida Rolf’s principles, which he calls “Normal Function.” (His book, the only one available and only in German, translates as “The New Ease of the Body.”) Normal Function is based on the role of the fascia – the multiple layers of elastic, connective tissue which provide shape and structure to all of the muscles, bones and organs throughout the body. Fascia, when used “normally,” help to integrate movement (walking, climbing, kneeling, lifting, sports, dance, etc.) by providing the most economical way to initiate each movement, and by enhancing balance and flexibility. In her classes and private sessions, Marcia combines this revolutionary method with her 20-year plus teaching experience in the Alexander Technique. Marcia, who comes from a dance and theatre background – she has focused for many years on working with the deaf both nationally and internationally -- is one of only two teachers of Normal Function in the US. Her private teaching space in Joe’s basement is secluded and relaxing. Use the contact form below to contact Marcia Freeman

“[Joe’s] made sure students felt comfortable.”

– Melissa Mackey
Parkdale High School

Melissa Mackey teaches in a Special Education program at Parkdale High School for students ages 15-21.  When students expressed interest in learning about hip-hop dance, Melissa applied for a grant from the Washington Post to bring Joe’s into her school for workshops.

Melissa explained, “Brooke and the other instructors were so engaging and they made the classes fun.  Their clear instructions made students feel comfortable. They watched to be sure our dancers were always following along.”  This year, 20 students signed up for more classes.

“Brooke was very generous and so accommodating.  She was interested in anything I had to tell her about the students.”  And, Melissa appreciates what Joe’s offers the Mount Rainer and Prince George’s County area: “Joe’s Movement provides such interesting experiences for people in the community…especially their events for teens and young adults on the weekends.”
