Shawna Renee
Yoga

Shawna Renee has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. She was first
introduced to the practice in primary school. Fast-forward to 2007, Shawna found herself juggling motherhood, a career and marriage with limited success. After nearly passing out from exhaustion she realized it was time to take control of her life. Within the week, she returned to her daily yoga practice and thus began a challenging but necessary transformation. Inspired by the way yoga helped save her life, Shawna enrolled in Yoga Teacher Training, studying under Faith Hunter & Iiesha Ali, earning her Hatha Vinyasa Yoga Certification in 2009. Shawna’s approach to teaching is a true combination of joy and purpose. Each practice challenges students explore the subtle but powerful connection between the body, mind and soul by working hard in class and off the mat.

Joe's 15 year Anniversary Gala

“Always a big hit.”

-Jermaine Lewis
Assistant Manager, Cultural Participation
Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, College Park

For the past several years, Joe’s has been a part of Maryland Day, a day-long event which attracts over 70,000 people to the University of Maryland for campus-wide activities.   Workshops in hip-hop and North African dance get visitors moving and the Living Statues fill the pavilion.

Jermaine Lewis explains that Joe’s offers something totally different than what other groups can provide: “People can jump right into Joe’s workshops.” Joe’s Living Statues are “always a big hit and create an interactive, festive experience for the community.”

“It’s fun to observe people checking to see if they’re real and take pictures with them.  It adds a lot of excitement to the day.”
