El último concierto de la Serie Cultural Pa’lante se enfocará en la música y cultura del Caribe por medio del arte de Taisha Estrada, cantautora, vocalista, y cuentista Puertorriqueña basada en Washington, DC. Acompañen a Taisha por un viaje musical en la que se explora música e historias influenciada por su crianza con sus abuelos quienes sintieron gran devoción a la patria, y por los ritmos Puertorriqueños de bomba y plena que corren por sus venas. Por medio de su música, pinta imágenes de las islas para explorar la vida, el amor, y la bella relación entre la humanidad y la tierra.
Este taller será una introducción completa al género de música más antigua de Puerto Rico conocido como bomba. Al terminar el taller, los participantes tendrán un entendimiento básico de la historia de bomba, conocimiento básico de algunos pasos de baile y ciclos de percusión para los ritmos básicos de bomba, y comprensión de canto por medio de la práctica de coro. Este taller será facilitado por Ivelisse Díaz, directora de Las Bompleneras Unplugged, quien tiene más de 30 años de experiencia practicando y 15 años de experiencia enseñando bomba, y que nos visitan desde Chicago gracias a Semilla Cultural.

Coreyah is a psychedelic Korean folk music group whose six members integrate traditional Korean instruments, vocals, guitar, and percussion. Since their 2010 debut, Coreyah has pioneered a new style of Korean music that blends genres of contemporary ethnic and popular sounds while still maintaining the distinctive characteristics of traditional Korean instruments. The group’s unique freewheeling, polystylistic vision combines a variety of influences, including Anglo-American rock, Balkan gypsy, and genres from South America and Africa.

Carbon-ATE: An Afro-Future exhibition is work from regional artists that are re-imagining and creating the narrative around Blackness as they see fit. In their work, they are choosing to create visual representations of an optimistic outlook on the present and future concepts about Black culture and aesthetic. These artists—though in different points in their career—have one major thing in common, their conscious decision to create and archive Black identity—and they ate.

This class will give you the same positive vibe as being at your favorite dance club while burning a ton of calories without even realizing you’re exercising. You will learn the basics of belly dance, drill some fun combos while focusing on technique, and move your hips to an eclectic and high energy playlist. This is what we do on Friday! This show draws from the past and present using Kujichagulia- Self Determination, as a lens to acknowledge and honor some of our cultural norms from African and African American history. We tell the stories of an African young woman’s Rite of Passage, while honoring the contributions of her life; we honor our Babas through a prayer sung in Xhosa and the South African Gumboot as well as other stories that give a window to our place on this planet in the future.
