joe’s dirtie lab. with LiviJanae & Shartoya Jn.Baptiste

joe's dirtie lab. is a monthly artist critique seminar in collaboration with Joe's Movement Emporium, Red Dirt, and The Gateway Media Arts Lab. Growing out of Red Dirt's monthly Flex Seminar that uses Liz Lehrman’s Critical Response Process, joe's dirtie lab. is excited to open up this critique to the wider DMV arts community. Each month, an artist will get an in-depth critique of their work-in-progress or a body of work from their peers, curators, collectors, and art enthusiast. Artists can range from visual artists to fashion designers, filmmakers, writers, graphic artists, performance artists, and more. ASL interpreters are present at each session to aid the deaf community.

The ultimate goal of joe's dirtie lab. is to support the working artist, give critical feedback, and be an honest space for the creative. It’s OK to share messy, rough edges. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good—proceed.

Join us as we welcome movement artists LiviJanae and Shartoya Jn.Baptiste as they present the progress of the dance film The Black Smile. This film challenges the threat of a black smile, and the attempted suppression of black joy and success. It celebrates healing and collaboration amongst black women and will be a result of an intentional process. This is not a struggle story; this is a joyful story. Let no woman that begins this process leave the same. Let no woman that watches this film, think the same.
