The Barrier Project (OFF SITE)

  • 4516 41st Avenue North Brentwood, MD (map)

May 11th at 3 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm

The Audience Choice Award winner of the 34th Annual Choreographers Showcase, Orange Grove Dance Company, will close the “Mapping Racism” series with a site-specific dance work. The performance brings awareness to a racial landmark that is still in existence in 2019.

A guardrail “barrier” located between the towns of Brentwood and North Brentwood geographically divides the community, separating the demographics of people - one side historically Caucasian and the other historically African American. Orange Grove Dance will conduct interviews and use their process called “memory mapping” to conjure up and create this public event, abstractly highlighting the past, present, and future of such a landmark.

Tickets: $10 per person

An expansion of Orange Grove Dance’s 16-17  NextLOOK  residency, the 1 Mile Radius Project 2018  allows for deeper exploration of the unique spaces within a one-mile radius of Joe's Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier, MD. Through dance, film and projections, it will investigate the personal and uniquely traversed spaces of the community, zooming into and magnifying the intimate nooks and crevices of seemingly familiar areas. Universal themes of home, public space, and the personal connections that make up a community give all audiences access to the material.
