Freedom Stories Law Forum: The Arc of Slavery to Mass Incarceration
Freedom Stories Law Forum will continue the work of Out of the Vineyard, inviting the community to hold deeper conversations about the policies and environment in our state as it relates to the impact of freedom-making amongst the enslaved. Lawmakers will explore the impact the freedom suits of Prince George’s County had on laws and policies, how slave laws were interpreted to both grant and deny freedom, as well as modern-day mass incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline. We will also touch on other topics of discussion including the systematic and systemic use of laws and rules to rationalize and justify the inhumane bondage, exploitation, and incarceration of Africans.
On this panel:
Nicole A. Williams, Esq., Prince George's County - District 22 Delegate
Wayne Lawson, UDC senior law student
Rohulamin Quander, Esq., former DC Senior Administrative law judge
Moderated by Renee Battle-Brooks, Esq., renowned attorney
Join our panelists for this forum as they explore and question The Arc of Slavery to Mass Incarceration: Where Are We Now and What Are We Doing About It?
Joe’s is part of the Freedom Stories Initiative with programs produced in partnership between Prince George’s Community College Center for Performing Arts, Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, Prince George’s County Office of Human Rights.
Freedom Stories discovers the histories, stories, names, and places where freedom from enslavement and oppression began in Prince George’s County. Through dialogue facilitated by programs, Freedom Stories strives to connect legacy to present day Prince George’s families and provide insight into the determination and resilience of Blacks living in Prince George’s County in the 1700’s. We explore history to create a more just and equitable present experience for our community and beyond.
