Delve into the history of Gumboot dance with Lesole’s Dance Project in Strictly Gumboots.
The performance will feature the moves and percussive sounds of Gumboot (Isicathulo), a kind of "instant message" of dance performed by dancers wearing wellington boots.
Gumboot is rooted back in the dark gold mine tunnels of South Africa. Initially a codified tap used by black miners deprived of conversation, gumboot dancing today is one of the most expressive South African dance genres.
