Art in Everyday Life: Awakening the Senses with Contemplative Arts

Contemplative arts practices are designed to awaken us to the beauty that exists in the ordinary things of our everyday lives, transforming the mundane into the magical. These art activities can be regarded as a form of meditation in action and can enrich or extend a mindfulness-awareness practice into other contexts besides sitting meditation. They are not intended to make us artists, though they might help artists deepen their practice; they are intended to help us become better and more mindful humans. They can also serve to ground us and give us a sense of connectedness, something we all need as many of us are experiencing high levels of anxiety and distractedness. This program is open to anyone. No experience with art or meditation is required, only curiosity.

This program will offer several contemplative arts exercises and activities, interspersed with short periods of sitting meditation. We will use a mix of visual, sound, and movement-based activities to explore working intensely with the mind/ body as a unit and to awaken the senses to the phenomenal world around us. This exploration can become the ground of discovery for leading a more mindful, creative, and artful life. Practicing artists or not, when awake to the world around us, we can all learn to live life as a work of art.

Practicalities: This workshop is suitable for anyone. The instructor will try to accommodate special needs whenever possible. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing. An art supplies needed will be provided by the instructor.

About the Instructor: Steve Wanna is a multi-disciplinary sound and visual artist whose work includes music, sound design for dance collaborations, sculpture, installation, photography, and works for mixed media. His work showcases the hidden, often ignored beauty he finds in chaotic and seemingly random phenomena. Abstract, experimental, and multimedia, his work is inspired by science, nature, and philosophy, often incorporating elements of controlled randomness—uncertainty is built into the process.
