About Federico Peña
Born in Montevideo (Uruguay) and raised in Buenos Aires (Argentina), where his professional career began at age 16, Federico arrived in the US in the mid-80's to attend Berklee College of Music. He would leave Boston after two semesters to begin working with some of DC’s top Go-go bands, quickly making a name for himself in the area. A fateful meeting with young bass player Michelle Johnson - who would later become Meshell NdegéOcello - lent Federico enough visibility to go on and work with some of the most notable artists and musicians in music.
His intuitiveness and sensibility to different styles makes Peña the bearer of a unique musical perspective, ”All these cultures coming together at the same time...It means he plays whatever you want him to play.", says Grammy Award winning bassist and Miles Davis collaborator Marcus Miller. As a member of Miller's band for almost five years during the last decade, Federico was also part of SMV (Stanley Clarke, Miller & Victor Wooten) and DMS (George Duke, Miller & David Sanborn), as well as notable Miller releases such as "A Night in Monte Carlo", "Tutu Revisited: The Music of Miles Davis”, and "Renaissance".
Though he is best known for his longtime association with Me'Shell N'DegeOcello and Marcus Miller, Peña has also toured and/or recorded with Maxwell, Chaka Khan, Raúl Midón, Cassandra Wilson, Roy Hargrove's RH Factor, Bebel Gilberto, Rachelle Ferrell, Angela Bofill, Youssou N'Dour, and others. Through the years, and while gaining invaluable experience as an arranger, producer, and MD (musical director), the pianist has always maintained a strong relation with his composing side and has been compiling material for several releases.
Based in Mount Rainier, Federico brings his 'Emergence' Trio to Joe’s Movement Emporium (World Arts Focus) as part of the Outdoor Performance Series, this coming Saturday, October 23rd (@7pm). Rounding out the trio are Quincy Phillips (drums), and Mikel Combs (bass).
